1976 Masi Gran Criterium Carlsbad Mario Confente* with Super Record HS  MC 60 / #04 58
We know this was made at the Carlsbad facility where many of the legends in bicycle fabrication and paint had their start.
Brian Baylis, Mario Confente , Rob Roberson , Dave Tesch , Jim Allen ,Jim Cunningham and many others had been in attendance.
What part of the process did Mario Confente have in this if any ?
He was just about to depart the project at this time -  The brake cable guides are HIS for sure
It seems that he did personally produce many of the larger size and made to measure frames .
Along with beautifully scalloped seat stay caps and this bike has the slotted Fisher fork crown
which Mario was known to choose. Ted Kirkbride writes : Back in 1976. Mike Howard built frames and Brian Baylis painted the Masi  ????
As reported to the B Hovey list :
From 1976 -   MC 60
04 58
Red (tomato)
Mario Confente TT brake cable guides
BZ shift levers -   clamp on FD
one set H2O BZ
Fork Crown =. SF - Slotted Fisher
WC stripes Some speculate frame was repainted by Jim Allen in the late 70s as the flags/GC removed and possibly the Confente cable guides installed . That and the original paint I am not sure , however the tell tail repaint signs on the fork crown DO NOT exist
Sizes :
Head Tube   165mm
Top Tube       570mm
Seat Tube     590mm. to top  (58 to center)
Chainstay      ~ 410mm
The frame has no dents or dings = There are some scratches inside left chain stay and seat stay
also for some reason the region where the clamp on Front Derailleur mounts
other than a minor touch up the frame is good to go and would be a incredible E'roica edition Something Additional  By chance, a decision was taken at Masi in 1978 that would elevate the beauty of Dave’s "Breaking Away" bike and others built that year to a higher level. The standard Gran Criterium decal set, comprising many visually complicated elements, was modified and simplified which significantly enhanced the appearance of the bikes. Depending on who is telling the story, this change occurred either because of difficulties with applying the Italian-supplied decals resulting in the decision to reduce the number of them, or because there was only one Masi model produced in the US and it was felt unnecessary to have ‘Gran Criterium’, references to Milano and international flags all over the bike. Whatever the reason, the effect was brilliant. With the decal clutter removed Dave’s Masi was a thing of beauty that even a layperson could appreciate. It was a one-year mod that happened to coincide with the movie and the following year the original cluttered Masi decal set was back in use.
